What is the plight of the regular print book, since the rise of the e-book? This article examines the readers preferred taste of book reading medium.

When we think of computers, we think of the ease and speed they bring to our lives. Computers bring unmatched speed and power when it comes to regular computing tasks of our lives. However, researchers have found, through a small scientific study, a reader can still perform the manual task of reading a paper book faster than reading the new computerized version of a book, the e-book.

Faster than a Machine

This small study debuted in the journal of Live Science on July 6, 2010 from the article titled "Real Books Quicker to Read than E-Books". In terms of numbers, an ebook reader using an iPad reads 6.2 times slower than a regular book and an ebook reader who uses a Kindle ebook reads 10.7 times slower than a person reading regular book. So no matter what brand of ebook a reader chooses, reading an ebook takes more time.

The faithful regular book reader should not tout success because although using an e-book makes you read slower, the e-book has made accomplishing the task of reading become more popular, according to the study. For instance, out of the twenty-four people studied, on a scale of one to seven (seven being the highest), the e-books beat out the regular book. Another positive for the e-book, as noted in NewsWeek's article "Back Story: Books vs. E-Books" is its capacity for green, for which it said that the e-book is more “green” than a print book.

Print Versus Electronic

Certainly there are things that a regular book can provide that an e-book cannot. For example, a reader using a regular book can easily write notes on the margins of the page (annotate). Also, a reader using a regular printed book can easily open the book and begin to read it at anytime as long it is within reach, instead of powering up a source.

Another advantage of the non-electronic book comes from the benefit of it being in print. When reading regular books, the reader does not have to worry about losing access to their book because of a software glitch or other technological reasons, or a publisher revoking their rights to the copy of the book. Once you buy that book you own that book. Lastly, the study found that “reading the printed book was more relaxing than using electronic devices.”

In the end, the choice between a regular book and an electronic book depends upon an individual’s taste. Each has an advantage and disadvantage. Print books allows for nostalgia and relaxation, while electronic books allows for quick variety and easy transportation. One is more popular than the other, but each delivers the same goal, reading.
